Enterprise Database Migration Lifecycle: From On-Premises Infrastructure to Cloud-Native Architecture
Keywords: Database migration, Cloud transformation, Oracle ZDM, Schema conversion, Operational excellence.
Abstract: This scholarly article explores the comprehensive process of migrating enterprise databases from on-premises environments to cloud platforms, focusing specifically on Oracle and SQL Server implementations. The article explores the fundamental drivers behind these transitions, including cost optimization, improved scalability, and reduced infrastructure management overhead. The article presents a structured methodology for successful migrations, beginning with thorough assessment and dependency mapping, followed by strategic tool selection and implementation approaches that minimize business disruption. The authors analyze the relative strengths of key migration technologies, including AWS Database Migration Service, Azure Database Migration Service, and Oracle Zero Downtime Migration, while addressing critical technical challenges in schema conversion and procedural code compatibility. Implementation strategies such as Blue/Green deployments are evaluated for their effectiveness in reducing transition risks. The article concludes with an examination of post-migration operational practices that leverage cloud-native capabilities for enhanced performance, resilience, and cost optimization, demonstrating how organizations can establish continuous improvement frameworks to maximize long-term value from their cloud database investments.
