Self-Charging Electric Vehicles: Solar Panel Integration for Sustainable Transportation

Abstract: Solar panel integration on electric vehicles represents an innovative solution to address key barriers in sustainable transportation adoption. Electric mobility faces challenges, including limited charging infrastructure, dependency on grid electricity often derived from fossil fuels, and extended vehicle idle periods that represent untapped energy generation potential. Vehicle-integrated photovoltaics harness solar energy during both operation and stationary periods, providing supplementary charging that enhances autonomy and reduces infrastructure dependency. The evolution of this technology progressed from specialized racing prototypes to commercial applications through advancements in thin-film technology, power management systems, and specialized materials. Maximum Power Point Tracking technology and sophisticated Battery Management Systems optimize energy capture and utilization while specialized automotive solar materials maintain durability without compromising vehicle aesthetics or performance. Field evaluations demonstrate particular promise for commercial applications with predictable daytime operation patterns, especially in high-irradiance regions.
